Chronic Fatigue

Causes

Many of the people we see with Irritable Bowel Syndrome are suffering from Chronic Fatigue (CF) or Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS).

Chronic Fatigue is defined as a long lasting debilitating fatigue lasting a minimum of 6 months for no obvious reason. This fatigue is not alleviated by rest and impedes an individual’s ability to function normally.

CF/CFIDS can be caused by a mixture of imbalances in each sufferer so the people we see each have their own version of the syndrome with different causes. Most sufferers have experienced

  • A stressful episode in their life

  • A flu-like illness

  • Infection by the Epstein-Barr virus.

Tests often show hormonal imbalances such as adrenal fatigue and sub-optimal thyroid function. Heavy metal toxicity is also common, and people with CF/CFIDS often experience gut issues including some IBS symptoms and consequently we find a high percentage of our patients with CF/CFIDS have some form of imbalanced gut flora, Candida and/or parasites. It is also very common for people with CF/CFIDS to have food sensitivities or intolerances.

Chronic-Fatigue

As optimal gut health underpins every aspect of body functioning it makes good sense for CF sufferers to consider their gut health first before beginning other types of interventions.

At IBS Clinics we have a lot of experience of working with people with CF/CFIDS and have been able to make a significant difference to their lives.
