Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive: The Most Advanced Stool Test In The UK

The Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive is the most advanced stool test available in the UK — and the only one that maps the 200+ beneficial bacteria that make up a healthy gut community. Using cutting-edge metagenomic sequencing, it doesn’t just screen for pathogens; it reveals the full picture of your gut ecosystem, assessing what your microbes are actually producing and how that’s influencing your digestion, immunity, energy, and beyond.

In a single at-home sample, you get 40 validated biomarkers across three panels: full microbiome ecosystem mapping, a gut physiology panel covering inflammation, intestinal permeability, and digestive enzyme output, plus a pathogen and parasite screen. It’s the test we reach for when we need to understand not just what’s going wrong, but why — and what your gut needs to recover.

Test Details:

  • Results ready in 4 weeks
  • Simple at-home sample collection
  • Not validated for persons under 18 years of age
  • Does not test for H. pylori (other specialised tests available)

Who Should Take This Test: Anyone experiencing bloating, irregular digestion, food sensitivities, or wanting to understand their gut health better. Share your professional results with any healthcare provider.

Description

Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive

Most stool tests tell you what’s going wrong. Very few tell you what’s missing.

The Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive is the only stool test we offer that maps the 200+ beneficial bacteria that make up your healthy gut community — the ones most tests don’t even look for. While standard gut tests focus narrowly on pathogens or a handful of inflammation markers, this test reveals the full picture: what’s thriving, what’s depleted, what’s producing harmful compounds, and what’s driving your symptoms at a root cause level.

If you’ve had gut tests before and been told everything looks normal, this is likely the test you’ve been missing.

The Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive stands apart from most stool tests because it uses metagenomic sequencing — the same technology used in cutting-edge microbiome research — rather than the older PCR or culture-based methods that can only detect what they’ve been specifically programmed to look for. While a standard stool test might screen for a dozen or so pathogens and call it done, this test maps your entire gut ecosystem across 200+ beneficial bacterial species, assessing not just presence but function — what those microbes are actually producing and how they’re influencing your health. It also combines three technologies in a single sample: full microbiome ecosystem mapping, a seven-marker gut physiology panel covering inflammation, immune defence, and intestinal permeability, plus an 18-target pathogen and parasite screen. The result is 40 validated biomarkers from one collection, benchmarked against a healthy reference range, with an expert summary written by microbiome specialists — a level of clinical depth that no other stool test currently available in the UK comes close to matching.

Who is this test suitable for?

We commonly use the Microbiome Explorer Comprehensive for clients presenting with:

  • IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) — diarrhoea-predominant, constipation-predominant, or mixed
  • Bloating, gas, and abdominal discomfort
  • SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) — as part of a broader picture alongside breath testing
  • Suspected gut dysbiosis or candida overgrowth
  • Food intolerances and reactivity
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Post-infectious gut symptoms
  • Chronic fatigue, brain fog, or mood disturbances with a suspected gut connection
  • Skin conditions such as eczema, acne, or psoriasis with a gut-skin axis component
  • Hormonal imbalances and women’s health concerns

Microbiome Profiling — 16 functional markers
Using advanced metagenomic sequencing, the test maps your entire gut ecosystem across 200+ commensal (beneficial) bacterial species — revealing not just which microbes are present, but what they’re doing. This includes whether your microbiome is producing enough butyrate (critical for gut lining integrity), how well you’re making anti-inflammatory short-chain fatty acids, whether harmful compounds like hydrogen sulphide or trimethylamine are being overproduced, and whether methane-producing archaea are contributing to constipation or bloating. Most tests miss all of this entirely.

GI Health Panel — 7 diagnostic markers
A functional assessment of your gut environment using validated ELISA technology, measuring calprotectin (gut inflammation), zonulin (intestinal permeability), secretory IgA (gut immune defence), pancreatic elastase (digestive enzyme output), lactoferrin, faecal occult blood, and faecal pH.

Pathogen & Parasite Panel — 18 diagnostic markers
Using highly sensitive RT-PCR technology, this panel screens for 18 pathogenic bacteria and parasites — including Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Dientamoeba fragilis, Clostridium difficile, and multiple strains of pathogenic E. coli — helping to identify or rule out infectious drivers of your symptoms.

How does it work?

Once we refer the test through our practitioner portal, a collection kit is posted directly to you. You collect a small stool sample at home using the easy-to-use swab, and return it to the laboratory using the prepaid packaging provided. Results are delivered within two to three weeks via an interactive digital report, which we review with you in detail during a follow-up consultation.
